Capital Gazette Communications
Published 07/25/10

With the location of Maryland's most lucrative gambling emporium now up to Anne Arundel County voters, the issue has begun to emerge in races for everything from County Council seats to the Governor's Mansion.

Some political observers do not expect the issue to dramatically drive voter turnout or tip the scales in statewide elections. But less than a week after Maryland's highest court ordered a ballot measure on the casino, politicians have begun staking out positions to appeal to local voters.

Some have shunned all contributions from gambling interests, while others have declared support for the Arundel Mills...

All should celebrate the right of citizens to petition their government. The fact that 40,000+ Anne Arundel County voters chose to sign a petition to challenge a zoning bill suggests that slots at Arundel Mills is not the will of County voters!
Ensuring that the County Council gets the zoning legislation right the next time, by providing adequate protections for all County residents, is well worth the present delay.
Let's engage our County officials to ensure that we get clearly worded referendum language that voters can read, understand, and then express their will by voting for or against it.

Political double speak - 2010-07-26 10:00:08

Governor O'Malley and Mr. Ehrlich's interjection of location preferance is unnecessary. Doesn't Cordish have the committment for slots license? Why would they lose it, and why would process have to start over? Once the 'confusion' of zoning location is clarified couldn't Cordish Cos. build, or is the issue Cordish Cos having been approved? The revenue to the State and County have been delayed for almost a year. The jockey club, declared backruptcy and citizens close to Laurel did not approve casino gambling. This could be a never ending cycle of referendums on a issue approved by the voters 18 months ago.

I'll save my visits - 2010-07-25 13:50:48

to play slots, when I go to Las Vegas. It's a lot more fun out there and the payouts are usually better relative to the risk.

Somebody let me know when table games come to Maryland, so I can play in games that might give someone with a little skill a better chance of winning something. In the meantimne, if I get the urge I can always go to Delaware, Pennsylvania or West Virginia.
And here Maryland is, still fighting over slots only parlors!

1 Racino, 5 Malls - 2010-07-25 12:08:34

AA County sold the idea to the people for the need to have 5 REGIONAL malls around which to plan smart growth. With considerable debate, real citizen participation, and transparancy, the areas were identified. Odenten Towne Center is the last to be developed with taxpayer support. At great expense to AA taxpayers with delayed rewards and long term progress. But, it was to be an investment in the future to secure County residents' quality of life.
Arundel Mills is a family centered, growth area. It was built with AA taxpayer subsidies and concessions. It is successful and generates jobs and revenue.
The County Exec and the Council failed to protect the people and review the long term consequences of their hasty actions to please. Just because Cordish Co. has money, doesn't mean IT is singularly qualified to determine the future of the people, that's what our govt is supposed to do for US. The Racino at Laurel offers us a 6th opportunity to generate revenue, jobs and plan for future growth that is beneficial to the community not a drag on progress. We also know that DE, PA etc are already expanding gambling to table games. And of course, the pundits will be promoting that for MD very soon. But, we also know that during this recession, the Racinos generated more revenue than stand alone slots. It is good for jobs creation, revenue generation and community for slots to go to a 6th growth area targeted at Laurel. Cordish and Magellan just need to work out the kinks.

Build the Casino and get on with it - 2010-07-25 10:19:30

This is a very 'charged' issue and will not go away quietly. The people of Maryland voted 'FOR' slots almost two years ago. The Anne Arundel County Council and the slots vendor followed all the rules, within the law, and we still are no closer to seeing the first dollar of tax revenue from this controversial revenue source. No one circumvented the system and yet the NIMBY's of Hanover and Severn still persist in micro-managing their duly elected county officials. Perhaps we will need a referendum the next time a Hanover resident needs a zoning variance to build their deck!
I was not a supporter of slots and will never visit a casino but I will vote 'FOR' the building of a casino in Arundel Mills and encourage my friends and neighbors to do the same simply as a vote 'AGAINST' NIMBYism.
