It was a festive day at the Naval Academy yesterday, as the freshmen got to see their families for the first time since Induction Day on July 1.

Midshipman 4th Class Jillian Coughlin of Annapolis receives a hug from her mother, Sue, as her father, Chris, and sister Hannah, 13, wait their turn. Yesterday marked the beginning of Parents’ Weekend, when plebes got to visit with their families for the first time since Induction Day on July 1. Each plebe performed 2,900 sit-ups and 3,000 push-ups, and ran 103 miles as part of Plebe Summer, according to the academy.
The US Naval Academy Plebe Parents' Weekend gives the plebes their first opportunity to spend time with their families since they began Plebe Summer on I Day, July 1.
By chance, as the plebes were about to assemble in formation before going on liberty, an upperclassman added to the moment when he drove across the Yard in a bright red Ford Mustang convertible with the top down, while a passenger held up a mast and sail.
A cool breeze was blowing across the Yard at the time, and the improvised USS Mustang was making good time.
