Scalia was honored with the "Man for All Seasons" award from the St. Thomas More Society of Maryland, a group devoted to the example of the 16th-century saint. The event was held in the Westin Hotel following the 52nd annual "Red Mass" for judges, lawyers and others in the legal profession.
The justice urged the hundreds in attendance to have the...

Excellent point. I have noticed, too, that when the two political extremes talk about each other, their side is rational and thoughtful, and the other side is unbending and hateful. And not just individual members of those groups...ALL of them.

Did you ever notice - 2010-10-24 10:19:52
Did you ever notice that the folks on the political left seem to have tolerance for everything except a political opinion that is different from theirs.
When there is a difference of opinions they attack with fury using words like evil or hateful.

That's not what our men and women overseas are fighting for. God doesn't need anyone to fight for him because he's omnipotent. He could wipe out the entire human race with just a thought, right? So why would he need soldiers with conventional weapons?

man of courage - 2010-10-24 08:29:00
Justice Scalia boldly stands for his beliefs in the face of bigots, just like Thomas Moore did. Freedom, free markets, God, and country. This is what our young men and women are fighting for. This is what Justice Scalia stands for.

He lacks courage!! - 2010-10-23 00:07:04
This award is so misplaced. This is a man who professes the teachings of Christ as a major influence in his life but is despicable and hateful in his actions toward mankind. Scalia has promoted tyrany by the free markets, dissolution of services to the poor and dismantling of the democracy that so many lives were spent building. We don't need history to judge Scalia's self-centered arrogant faith, it is obvious in his poor judgements.

"What is irrational is to reject the possibility of miracles in general and of (Jesus) Christ's resurrection in particular."
This from a learned man who is designed to weigh evidence to make decisions that affect 300 million people. That is staggering. I think that reason, in and of itself, would require one to reject these possibilities.

what? - 2010-10-22 15:55:29
By definition, faith is not based on rationalitym, it's based on the belief that soemthing we can not see, cannot prove of it existence, actually does exist, based on our beliefs and not on concrete evidence.
Rational:
1. reasonable and sensible: governed by, or showing evidence of, clear and sensible thinking and judgment, based on reason rather than emotion or prejudice
2. able to think clearly and sensibly: able to think clearly and sensibly, unimpaired by physical or mental condition, strong emotion, or prejudice
3. in accordance with reason and logic: presented or understandable in terms that accord with reason and logic or with scientific knowledge a rational explanation
4. able to reason: endowed with the ability to reason, as opposed to being governed solely by instinct and appetite

"A faith that has no rational basis is a false faith," Scalia said. "What is irrational is to reject the possibility of miracles in general and of (Jesus) Christ's resurrection in particular."
And there was once a possibility once that the moon was made of cheese. If course it is harder to prove that something does not exist if you can not find the thing . There is no ration proof on miracles and no concrete proof of the resurrection. Though I believe Neurologists have located a part of the mind responsible for religious experiences and the need for hope.
