Last month, the Maryland Transit Administration announced plans to alleviate parking problems at its Annapolis lot by adding a stop at the Davidsonville lot for the routes 950 and 922 buses, which travel to the District. The 950 bus also gained an additional stop at First Street in the District, as a result of rider requests. The changes took effect last week.
But some commuters wrote The Capital to complain that the First Street stop is near a...

The added bus stop - 2011-02-11 10:04:38
The added stop at was the last straw, and was on top of getting harassed by Police for parking in the only available spaces. I take the Metro now, it costs more but I get to work on time. The 5-10 min lost at the extra stop guarantees that the bus is stuck in even more traffic and arrives downtown too late for my job. I have daycare to wait for at home and then need to drop off second child at Pre K. I know that daycare issues are my doing, but the bus schedule planners obviously dont ride the bus, or they would know that the traffic does build quickly and is a serious problem. So by by bus, the roads are terrible and the traffic will only worsen, and Washington has better Metro system that many cities.

This should not be after thought - 2011-02-10 15:43:22
It is amazing when you see lack of planning. Inadequate parking at Metro station and bus commuter lots it's almost considered an after thought. More people riding metro, the response raise rates. Seems back asswards. Getting people out of cars is a good thing. I don't care what type of vehicle you drive the commute stinks. More parking, more buses, a drop at metro and coordinated effort. Legislators...forget the gambling tables, here's a real life issue.

Thanks MTA - 2011-02-10 09:07:46
As a 950 rider, I was one of many that advocated for the new stop at 1st & N. My office moved to this location, which obviously I had no control over. The new stop is important to me as it's much safer than the walk from N Capitol & H. I'm thankful for it and I'm sure other riders who previously had to make the walk from N Capitol & H do as well. How about talking to some of them? There is a need for additional buses and/or routing which may cut travel times, but as stated drive times in DC are unpredictable. There are obviously several issues to be addressed relative to this topic. But for now I'll say it again, thanks MTA for the new stop.

Clarification - 2011-02-09 14:14:40
I should clarify my comments that are quoted in the article. First, I would not characterize myself as "fuming," nor was that my characterization to the reporter, although some passengers may feel differently. I think we need to keep these issues in perspective.
Second, my "precious minutes" comment was in the context of going out of our way to stop in Davidsonville for the sole purpose of telling the good folks patiently waiting in line there that the bus has no more seats for them. That strikes me as a waste of time and, since traffic tends to build exponentially during that time, the lost minutes by the end of the route can be far greater than those lost just during the unnecessary detour. IF the Kent Island Express buses rarely are full, then perhaps that route would be more logically diverted to Davidsonville. I also like the idea of adding a Severna Park-Davidsonville-DC route. Severna Park already has a park-n-ride location on Rt. 2.
Buses are far less expensive than rail and are here now. We should be able to make this work and greatly expand the service. I have a hard time imaging a quicker, easier way to take more cars off the road.

950/922 Riders are encouraged to join a commuter email group. Go to http://yhoo.it/ggtntF and click on "Join Now." This is a group to talk about commuting on the 950/922 lines and to hopefully band together to get MTA to hear us!

@Reynold--Better Idea... - 2011-02-09 13:18:24
...why not just run a rail line out of DC down Route 50 all the way to Ocean City. Would solve a lot of problems all at once--daily commuting to DC, Bay Bridge congestion during the summer, traffic impact on Ocean Downs once they get table games...oh, the possibilities!
Imagine what the Annapolis and Davidsonville train stations would look like...picture them right in the median on 50/301!

Good - 2011-02-09 12:11:03
This crowding and inconvenience is good and should serve as a reminder to our politicians that mass transit is needed. Imagine a world where the metro ran much closer to Annapolis . Right you delegate and demand funding for more efficient mass transportation. Or raise the price of existing services to meet the customers demands.
