Capital Gazette Communications
Published 06/30/11

Some tourists don't have any trouble finding parking downtown when they come to visit Annapolis.

Paul W. Gillespie - The Capital A sign spells out in no uncertain terms that a Supreme Court justice will need parking in downtown Annapolis. Two days after the U.S. Supreme Court term ended, Justice Sonia Sotomayor’s motorcade pulled into prime spots on Market Space yesterday.

Two days after the U.S. Supreme Court's term ended, Justice Sonia Sotomayor's motorcade of five hulking black vehicles pulled into prime spots on Market Space, right in front of the Hard Bean Cafe, around noon yesterday.

The availability of the spaces wasn't a fluke. Each meter had had a paper sign taped to it since early in the morning stating that it was reserved for the Supreme Court.

At first, many city officials were unaware of the judge's visit. Throughout the day, however, the details became...

No big deal - 2011-07-04 09:51:44

Sorry but this is not a political issue.

Judges are targets simply because they make decisions that favor one person or group over another. There are winners and losers. Sometimes losers seek revenge.

Judges deserve to be protected. I don't hold this against her, even though I am of a different political persuasion than her.

Truefully..... - 2011-07-03 18:03:14

I wouldn't know who these people were if they stepped on my shoes, spit in my face, and said something about my mother.

I could care less about politics let alone the Supreme Court the only thing I dislike about them is the fact that they're taking away State's rights.

Five SUV's. How IMpressive. I wonder what would happen if a Republican President did this. There would be a Public Outcry.

Ridiculous.

"Just Another Liberal..." - 2011-07-01 14:30:49

And here we go again: political bitterness within a Capital Feature. My suggestion, William Cooke, is to run for office and convert the bitterness.

Then you can rid the world of all of us terrible liberals.

Pelican Brief? - 2011-07-01 09:19:45

I don't think Tom Clancy wrote that one.

Five SUVs is a bit much, though, there should be some level of security. I would not want to be the first head of a security detail to lose a SC Judge to some crazy nut job.

the arrogance of power - 2011-06-30 19:23:24

Mr. Pline makes a good point. No one would have noticed her or cared. But then again, that probably was the point. She wants to feel important. Remember also that Sotomayor opposes the right of individual citizens to defend themselves through the second amendment, but she feel entitled to have 5 SUVs filled with her well armed guards. She is just another liberal who thinks that she is more important than you.

hidden in plain sight - 2011-06-30 15:50:25

I would have been very surprised if she had walked down Main Street and been recognized by anyone. Seems to me 5 black suvs and signs that say "Supreme Court" bring just a tad more attention than a relatively anonymous woman walking with a single security detail acting as a spouse... Sheesh, whoever does the court security has been reading too many Tom Clancy novels.

Supreme Court - 2011-06-30 15:47:30

With the controversial issues the Supreme Court addresses, this is one that does indeed deserve a security detail. I don't know the extent of it, it sounds like it was a bit much - but perhaps there were recent threats made - let's give them the benefit of the doubt on this one. I hope she enjoyed her day!!

ok, commenting folks, do we remember what has happened in the past and of late, with people who represent the people? Such as Giffords in AZ? These folks need security everywhere, because unbalanced folks are everywhere. I think, for a change, money and time well spent.

Tell me.... - 2011-06-30 13:23:03

Why does a Supreme Court judge need a security detail? Security details are for people of national security. I do not count our judges, as important as they are to interpret laws, in that category. Another entitlement that can be cut from our Federal budget.
