Roger Warde Paine, Jr., USN, RET, 91, of Annapolis and formerly of San Diego, Calif., died Nov. 15 at his home after a brief illness.
Mr. Paine was born Aug. 13, 1917, in Austin, Texas, to the late Corine Malone and Rear Adm. Roger Warde Paine, Sr. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1939 and received his Masters in Nuclear Physics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1949.
Rear Adm. Paine served in the Navy for 37 years, during WW II, Korea and Vietnam. During WW II, he served in the submarines USS Pompano, USS Wahoo, USS Tinosa, and was in command of USS S-34 and USS Cubera. During this service and numerous war patrols, he was awarded the Silver Star and two Bronze Stars with Combat “V”. After obtaining his Master’s Degree, he served at Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory in N.M., the results of which became the foundation of this nation’s nuclear deterrent for decades...
