There probably isn't a national "Thank your recreation league coach" day, but there should be.

In Anne Arundel County, there are over 100 organized recreation councils and athletic associations. Thousands of adults volunteer in these programs to help involve area youngsters in sports activities.

Including practices, coaches usually donate a minimum of 10 to 15 hours a week during the baseball season.

It's hard to believe the dapper, elegantly dressed gentleman owned one pair of shoes and two pairs of pants as a child. But Arnold resident Louie McKinney was the son of a poor, widowed sharecropper who struggled to manage his farm while rearing nine children in Walhalla, S.C.

More amazing is the fact that McKinney, now 72, is one of America's top cops and the former acting director of the United States Marshals Service. He currently w...

Around Broadneck: Broadneck area benefits from Eagle Scout projects

Eagles usually hatch in the spring, but four new eagles emerged from the Ulmstead Barn in Arnold last Thursday evening. They are members of Boy Scout Troop 835. Each teen had fulfilled all the requirements to become an Eagle Scout, something only 2 percent of all Boy Scouts achieve.

The new Eagle Scouts, all of whom are Broadneck High School students, are: Joe DiPaola and Giovanni Gargano, both 16, and Ryan Jan and Sean Hocking, both 17.
<p...

Around Broadneck: Pirate treasure hunter held the attention of Arnold Elementary kids

The multipurpose room at Arnold Elementary School looked like the galley of a pirate ship, staffed by Lilliputians. Pint-sized scalawags swaggered by, muttering "Arrrgh!" They were adorned with bandanas printed with skulls and crossbones, paper eye patches and hand-scribbled temporary tattoos.

A much taller pirate herded the little rapscallions into orderly rows. He was Michael Kovaks, a second-grade teacher.

It turns out these...

Around Broadneck: BHS gears up for Tournament of Bands Championships

It's a sensory thrill ride on AstroTurf. It's "surround-sound" in 3-D, accompanied by a visual feast of pageantry, glitter and flurries of swirling streamers. There's drama, suspense, a few plotlines, but mostly it's an all-American spectacle.

And, at $7 for general admission, it's the same price as a movie ticket.

The Annual Tournament of Bands Chapter IX Championships is this area's Lollapalooza of hig...
