My grandchildren graduated from Annapolis High School in the 1990s and neither one went to Yale or jail. They graduated from a school where dedicated teachers and administrators worked hard to ensure that all students received a good education. The current superintendent and members of the Board of Education seem to be intent on criticizing a great school in an effort to shine the light on their efforts to improve test scores.

We would like to extend our congratulations to school food and nutrition services directors throughout Maryland. Thanks to their overwhelming support and enthusiasm, all of our 24 public school systems participated in the second annual Maryland Homegrown School Lunch Week (Sept. 14-18). This exciting week is part of the Farm to School Program which is designed to bring more Maryland-grown products to school lunches and to help educate students...

This is minor in our world of problems but I was surprised to see in the paper (The Capital, Oct. 1) the old logo for the Washington Capitals hockey team. The team hasn't used this now for several years. The Caps have a much better "Rock the Red" eagle.

Bob Burdon's opinion piece "Employer health care too costly" (The Capital, Sept. 13) accurately notes many of the concerns that businesses have with the increasing number of employer mandates. Policymakers who favor a requirement that employers provide health care for employees should also recognize the traditional definitions of "small business" vs. "large company" aren't always appropriate.

The question should be asked; how can American citizens who are unable to get health care, whether they can't afford it or having been turned down for coverage, get affordable health care without government intervention?

After reading through the house version, it seems that "Government wants to be in total control of my life and everyone else's lives from birth to death." No matter how you cut it, taxes on the entire ...

The speech was full of lies designed to protect the $15 billion in profits of the med insurance business. Profits that could help provide medical care for all. Like in France, etc., where 150 medical insurance co-ops provide coverage and excess profits go...

To those who have recently had harsh words to say about firefighters: Remember on Sept. 11, 2001 firefighters in New York City (does anyone doubt that their firefighters have a different mentality than ours?) charged into burning, falling buildings in a last ditch, knowingly grim chance to save others. And in the process, they lost their lives and their families lost them.

In the days after that horrific day, we all waved at fire trucks...

Chapman and Gibson forgot the facts when writing about county firefighters (The Capital, Aug. 17). Saying "no nasty daily commutes?" Sure they work a 24/72 schedule but many firefighters live out of county and state commuting several hours to get to work. After you "throw in all those mandatory holidays" someone still works and responds when you call 911. Have you spent a holiday in a firehouse with your disappointed childr...

Health care debate is the healthy way for people to express how they feel about pending legislation. It is a right of all Americans and at no time should any one person be denied their right. It is also expected that rights are protected no matter which side of the debate you represent.

For me, health care is a personal choice. I have benefitted from working for a company that provides insurance to employers. Many Americans have that op...

The outrage sweeping the country is not limited to the fear of government dictated health care but is just as much a reaction to the budget busting $787 billion stimulus package, a budget that doubles the national debt, a pork laden appropriations bill, a cap and trade energy bill that will double energy costs to all Americans without solving the atmospheric pollution problem. Equally troubling and lending to the national outrage is the questi...

Elisha Sauers' recent article "Hands-on jobs gain appreciation in economic downturn" (The Capital, Sept. 6) was right on point, minus the omission of one very important trade on the list - electricians. Many people overlook trades like masonry or electrical construction when choosing a career, but often these careers provide a good income that is stable and includes benefits. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 7 percent in...

The Democratic Party acts more like the Communist Party - people go to a town hall meeting and are called Nazis, brown shirts and racist. By Speaker of the House Pelosi, Obama appoints Van Jones to Green Job Czar. Jones is known to be a far left radical who says the conservative views are terrorist views. The Senators and Congressmen we put int office forget who put them in. We voted them...
