Announcements

Now - April 6 – Tax help. Appointments for assistance on state and federal income tax returns and help with preparing and e-filing your personal tax returns will be available Feb. 1 through April 6 at the Annapolis Senior Activity Center, located at 119 S. Villa Ave. in Annapolis. This is a free service coordinated by the Internal Revenue Service and the Department of Aging and Disabilities. Appointments can be made by calling the senior activity center at 410-222-1818.

Now - April 14 -Tax help. Free income tax assistance and preparation service through AARP is available for seniors and taxpayers with middle and low incomes from 8 a.m. to noon every Saturday through April 14 at the Knights of Pythias Lodge, 2529 Solomons Island Road in Edgewater, across from the Annapolis Harbour Center. No appointment is necessary. For directions or more information, call 410-263-3888.

Feb. 12 - Diabetes program. The South County Senior Center’s Diabetic Support Group will meet at 12:30 p.m. Feb. 12 at the center, 27 Stepneys Lane in Edgewater. Mary Ann Howell, a registered nurse from the Department of Aging and Disabilities, will be the guest speaker. She will speak about the different types of insulin available to diabetics, and will also answer questions. For more information, call 410-222-1927.

Feb. 13 - Provider group. The Senior Provider Group is hosting Clare Whitbeck of United Seniors of Maryland at 9 a.m. Feb. 13 at Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church, 611 Baltimore Annapolis Blvd. in Severna Park. Ms. Whitbeck will discuss legislative issues of prime importance to seniors. For more information on membership or the meeting, call 443-223-0414.

Feb. 14 - Valentine's Day. A special Valentine's Day dance with light refreshments, a DJ and singing by Charles Thomas will be held at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Annapolis Senior Center, 119 S. Villa Ave. For more information, call 410-222-1818.

Feb. 14 - Valentine’s Day. Celebrate a love-filled afternoon with singing and entertainment during a “Love is in the Air” special event at 12:45 p.m. Feb. 14 at the Arnold Senior Center, 44 Church Road. Make a reservation by stopping at the center or calling 410-222-1922.

Feb. 20 - Mardi Gras. Wear your purple, green and gold to the Fat Tuesday Mardi Gras celebration at 12:30 p.m. Feb. 20 at the Annapolis Senior Center, 119 S. Villa Ave. The winners of the costume contest will be crowned king and queen for the day. Light refreshments will be served. Call 410-222-1818 for more information.

Feb. 22 - Famous Dave’s. Seniors are invited to join their friends for lunch at 11 a.m. Feb. 22 at Famous Dave’s Restaurant in Annapolis. The gathering is being organized by the Annapolis Senior Activity Center. Transportation will be provided by county van. Sign up in advance by calling 410-222-1818.

March 30 - Variety show. The Grasonville Senior Center is seeking talent acts for its third annual variety show and dinner, which will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. March 30 at 4802 Main St. in Grasonville.The show is open to all ages and a wide variety of talents will be showcased. A limited amount of tickets will be available for $10. Call Ann Martin at 410-827-6010 for information on joining the show.

April 19-22 - Norfolk trip . The South County Senior Center is sponsoring a trip to the Virginia International Tattoo and International Azalea Festival in Norfolk, Va., April 19-22. The cost is $470 per person double occupancy, or $619 per person single. The trip is full of sight-seeing, including the Azalea Festival Parade and a train ride through the Norfolk Botanical Gardens.For more information, call the center at 410-222-1927.

April 22 - Celtic Tattoo trip. A trip to the Virginia International Tattoo featuring the largest tattoo in the United States — 850 artists, three shows, marching bands, massed pipes, military drill teams, display acts, choral groups, Celtic dancers, color guards and more — departs at 7 a.m. April 22 from the South County Senior Center, 27 Stepneys Lane in Edgewater.

The cost is $117 and includes lunch at the Painted Lady Restaurant in Norfolk, Va. Call 410-222-1927 for trip details.

June 7 - King Tut exhibit. A trip to see the King Tutankhamun (King Tut) exhibit at The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia will be held June 7. The trip is sponsored by the South County Senior Center and departs at 6:30 a.m. from the center, 27 Stepneys Lane in Edgewater. The cost is $90 and includes lunch at the historic City Tavern in Philadelphia. Call 410-222-1927 for trip details.

Transportation. The Anne Arundel County Health Department provides transportation services for eligible Medical Assistance/Health Choice clients. Individuals with a valid Maryland Medical Assistance/Health Choice Card and no means of public or private transportation may be eligible for transportation to and from medical appointments.

For this type of service, call AAA Transport at 800-442-2858. Questions or concerns about rider services should be directed to the county Health Department at 410-222-7152.

Make blankets. A new program formed by members of the Grasonville Senior Center is in search of volunteers to help give the gift of handmade, no-sew fleece blankets, throws and wraps to residents of the Corsica Hills Nursing Center in Centreville.

Fleece items created will include a tag stating it was donated by the Grasonville Senior Center and will be personalized with the recipient’s name.

The group will meet at 12:30 p.m. Mondays in the craft room of the senior center, 4802 Main St. in Grasonville Participants are asked to bring their own scissors.

New volunteers are always welcome, and monetary donations will be accepted to purchase necessary supplies. For more information, call Ann Martin at 410-827-6010 or Wilma Elchin at 410-604-6176.

Trips out West. The Arnold Senior Center Trip Committee has teamed up with Collette Vacations to offer a five-day trip to San Antonio, Texas, in May. Cost of the trip, which departs on May 14, is $1,259 per person for double occupancy and $1,609 for single occupancy.

The committee also has planned a seven-day National Parks Tour, which departs Sept. 2 and includes Grand Teton National Park near Jackson Hole, Wyo., and a two-night stay inside Yellowstone National Park. The cost is $2,419 per person for double occupancy and $3,119 for single occupant.

Complete itineraries are available at the center, and a representative from Collette Vacations will give a slide show presentation at 9 a.m. Feb. 21 at the center.

Senior Hall of Fame. The search is on for Maryland residents age 60 and older who have made an outstanding contribution to improve the lives of others in the community, to be nominated for the 2007 Maryland Senior Citizens Hall of Fame. The nominating period closes April 30.

Nominations may be made by an individual or an organization. A completed nomination form, a letter of reference from an individual who knows the person’s accomplishments and a picture of the candidate are required.

Nomination forms are available by calling Parker Koons at 410-828-5852 or Dr. Robert Lloyd at 410-744-6101. Mail requests and completed forms to the Maryland Senior Citizens Hall of Fame, 800 Southerly Road, Box 1, Towson, MD 21286-8403.

Trips scheduled. Reservations are being accepted for the following trips through the Arnold Senior Center:
•Dover Downs on April 18.
•“The Drowsy Chaperone” in New York City on May 2.
•San Antonio, Texas, May 14-18.
•Carroll County progressive lunch on May 29.
•“Social Security” June 20 at the Totem Pole Playhouse in Fayetteville, Pa.
•Yellowstone National Park Sept. 4-11.
•Shenandoah Valley to see the fall foliage Oct. 18 and 19.

Current senior center membership is required to participate. Trips costing less than $100 require full payment at the time of reservation. Reservations are accepted from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday and Friday at the center, 44 Church Road in Arnold. For more information, call 410-222-1922.
