Because of his Catholic faith, Charles Carroll of Carrollton was barred from entering politics, practicing law and voting. Carroll faced persecution under English rule for his beliefs, but he ensured that he and others would not longer fear such treatment when he signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776, becoming the only Catholic to sign the famous document.

Over 300 years later, the Carroll House still stands in Annapolis, one of only 15 U.S. birthplaces of the Declaration's signers that remain standing.

The history of the Carroll family comes alive at this house and garden overlooking Spa Creek in Annapolis. Public programs, workshops, and special tours feature living history, 18th century teas, music, hands-on architectural history and archeology.

The Carroll House is a restoration-in-progress. This site bears great historical significance to the state of Maryland and America as the home of three generations of the Carroll family, all of whom had their impact on a developing state and nation.
