Victualling Warehouse

Victuals is an eighteenth-century term describing food supplies, such as barreled beef and pork, flour, and molasses. The Victualling Warehouse at 77 Main Street is typical of warehouses lining the southwest side of the dock. In a 1748 description of the property, it was clear that the waterline of the dock is not as we see it today but actually came up as far as this warehouse.

During the Revolutionary War the warehouse was taken over by the State government. It was then used for storage of supplies awaiting shipment to the Continental Armies, headed up by George Washington. These supplies were vital to the troops survival.

The building, which burned to the ground in the late 18th century and was rebuilt in 1816, was purchased and restored by the State of Maryland as a Bicentennial Project. Currently, it serves as Historic Annapolis Foundation's Museum Store and Welcome Center and has a model of the 1750s-1790s waterfront.

It is the starting point for two audio-cassette Walking Tours of Annapolis, and has a selection of books and gifts related to the history of Annapolis. Historic Annapolis Foundation's Archaeology Lab is located on the second floor. The Museum Store is open daily.
