Getting in and around Annapolis

Parking
Parking is available at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium off Rowe Boulevard; you can take the trolley-shuttle into downtown. Other options include Gott's Court Garage or the Whitmore Garage, both located off Calvert Street. The downtown Hillman Garage on Duke of Gloucester Street fills quicker and is busier than the other garages.

You can try parking at a metered space,or parking in a residential zone, but for no more than two hours. Parking Enforcement Officers are constantly on patrol downtown and violators are likely to be fined.

Buses
Around Town
Downtown Annapolis and nearby Parole are served by Annapolis Transit which is operated by the Annapolis Department of Transportation.

It runs five fixed routes (Gold, Orange, Green, Yellow, and Red); a hybrid fixed-route (Brown route) that deviates for curb-to-curb service for the physically challenged; a commuter shuttle to and from Kent Island; and fringe parking lot shuttles from the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium to downtown Annapolis.

It's easy, convenient and only 75 cents base fare to get around Annapolis, whether you are going from downtown to Annapolis Mall, or from Eastport to the Anne Arundel Medical Center, or from Riva Road to Bay Ridge.

There are 170 stops along the service route. Many have benches and/or shelters. Buses are wheel-chair accessible. All are air-conditioned.

The "clean and green" Compressed Natural Gas Trolley was unveiled in 1998.

Fixed routes run from 5:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and the Brown route runs from 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 8 a.m. to 10 p. m. Saturday, and from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday. The Brown and Gold Routes operate from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday.

In and out of Town
The Maryland Mass Transit Administration operates many bus routes and light rail in northern Anne Arundel County, as well as a route from Baltimore to Annapolis (Bus 14) and commuter routes from North Beach/Huntingtown to Washington (904).

The MTA contracts a route from Annapolis to the Metrorail/Amtrak stop at New Carrollton (921) and to Washington. It also offers a route from Crofton to New Carrollton (923). Additionally, there is a Kent Island/Annapolis/Washington line (922) and Kent Island/Annapolis/Baltimore route (210).

A bus runs from Laurel to Baltimore (320) and light rail from Cromwell/Glen Burnie runs into downtown Baltimore all the way to Timonium, north of the Baltimore Interstate 695 Beltway.

Carolina Trailways runs limited bus service through Baltimore, Glen Burnie, Severna Park, Annapolis through the Eastern Shore and to Ocean City. For information, call (919) 833-3601.

The Greyhound Lines Inc. has announced its new bus schedules for travel to Baltimore, Washington DC and the Eastern Shore:

Greyhound routes out of the Annapolis Department of Transportation at 308 Chinquapin Round Road include:

  • 9:35 a.m. -- To Baltimore and Washington D.C.
  • 12:30 p.m. -- To Stevensville, Easton, Cambridge, Salisbury and Ocean City. Connects in Salisbury to Norfolk and all points south.
  • 2:55 p.m. -- To Washington, D.C. direct.
  • 3:10 p.m. -- To downtown Baltimore direct.
  • 6:50 p.m. -- To Stevensville, Easton, Cambridge, Salisbury and Ocean City. Connection to Norfolk and all points south in Salisbury.
  • 7:05 p.m. -- To Stevensville, Denton, Harrington, Rehoboth, Bethany and Ocean City.
  • 9:20 p.m. To downtown Baltimore and Washington, D.C.
Most routes also operate in reverse.

Riders can also make connections to points north from Baltimore and points south and west from Washington, D.C.

Taxi cabs
Over 100 taxi cabs operate within and around Annapolis. All taxi cabs and drivers based in Annapolis are inspected, licensed and regulated by the ADPT.

Each licensed taxi cab has a round, colored sticker with its official number on it. The color this year is bright red with black letters. Base fare is $1.60 for the pickup and 20 cents or each one-sixth of a mile. For example, fare from downtown to Annapolis Mall would be approximately $7.

Two taxi cab stands are located at the foot of Main Street.

Small airports
Lee Airport in Edgewater, and Bay Bridge Airport on Kent Island, also serve private aviator needs.

The city operates on a "first come-first served" basis. The City has 60 public moorings in the Annapolis Harbor; there is an hourly mooring rate of $6 per hour and an overnight mooring fee of $20 per night. The City also provides 18 slips and 300 feet of bulkhead space at a fee of $1.75 per foot overnight.

Water Taxi
The Annapolis Harbor water taxis can be boarded at City Dock across from the Harbor Master's Office. Call (410) 268-7601 for details. Special taxi service and tours are available during the special events such as the boat shows or the Volvo Ocean Race.
