Obituaries


Malcolm Beers

Malcolm "Hank" Herbert Beers, a 47-year resident of Bowie, died April 26 at home. He was 83.

Born June 22, 1924 in Owego, N.Y., Mr. Beers graduated from Johnson City High School in New York.

Mr. Beers served in the Army Air Corps from 1943-1945. He was a staff sergeant stationed in Europe, and was a belly gunner on a B-24 bomber.

He had been employed with Sun Electric Corp. in sales from 1956 to 1965; manager of Belair Mobil from 1965 to 1971; owner/operator of Beers and Caroll Auto Repair from 1971 to 1976 and owner/operator of All Tune and Lube from 1989 to 1990.

He was a member of St. Pius X Church, and Scoutmaster for several Cub and Boy Scout troops. He was a member of North/South Skirmish Association, a Civil War shooting organization. He enjoyed woodworking, playing cards and target shooting.

Survivors include his wife, Irene Beers whom he married in 1947; a son, Timothy Beers of Bowie; two daughters, Lois Wickline of Hagerstown and Barbara Rodda of Anchorage, Alaska; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held today at 10:30 a.m. at St. Pius X Catholic Church.

Eileen Camardella

Eileen Camardella of Centreville and formerly of Bowie died April 24 at her home. She was 66.

Mrs. Camardella was born April 2, 1942 in the Bronx, N.Y. She had been an ophthalmologist assistant.

She had been a member of Ascension Catholic Church in Bowie. She had volunteered at St. Pius X Regional School and St. Mary's High School. She enjoyed traveling, boating, crafts and the ocean.

Survivors include her husband, Ross Camardella whom she married Nov. 22, 1964; two daughters, Denise Boyle and Cristy Moss, both of Grasonville; two brothers, Gerard Cushing of Kissimmee, Fla., and Barney Cushing of Nesconset, N.Y.; and five grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a son, James Camardella.

Services were held at Ascension Catholic Church, with burial in St. Peters Catholic Church Cemetery, Queenstown. Arrangements were by Evans Funeral Home.

James Hayden

James Joseph Hayden, a 20-year resident of Bowie died of renal cell cancer March 10 at his home. He was 53.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Derby Day, at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Chapel.

Arnold Meadows

Arnold Clayton Meadows of Bowie died April 9 at his home. He was 65.

Born July 22, 1942 in Cincinnati, Ohio, Mr. Meadows graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 1967 with a degree in architecture. He worked at various architectural firms in the Washington, D.C., area. He was a member of the American Institute of Architects, and throughout his career he worked on many notable projects.

Survivors include his former wife, Shirley Meadows of Crofton; two daughters, Susan Haag of Crofton and Sandy Judge of Sykesville; a brother, Ronald Meadows of Cincinnati; two sisters, Barbara Meadows of Cincinnati and Carol Taylor of Lumberton, Texas; and five grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held May 9 at 7 p.m. at Christian Community Presbyterian Church.

Arrangements were by Beall Funeral Home.

Helen Moore

Helen Moore of Tracys Landing died from liver cancer April 21 at her home. She was 85.

Born Dec. 2, 1922 in Detroit, Mich., she lived in the Washington, D.C., area for the last 61 years.

In 1948 she founded the National Ballet School and Company and became a noted ballet teacher, developing many professional dancers and instructors who are performing and teaching throughout the United States.

Trained in Michigan under Gertrude Jory and Theodore Smith, founding members of the Cecchetti Council of America, she continued her training under Leon Fokine and Lisa Gardner, a friend who founded the Washington School of the Ballet with Mary Day. Her ballet training was enhanced by her theatre studies at George Washington University.

She was president of the Northeast Regional Ballet Association and chairman of the East Coast Committee of the Cecchetti Council of America.

She was a member of the West River Sailing Club for many years, and enjoyed racing and cruising the family's 36-foot yacht. She was a champion swimmer and ice skater as a teenager.

Survivors include one son, William Moore Jr. of Virginia; one daughter, Pamela MacLean of Bowie; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She was predeceased by her husband of over 55 years, William Moore.

A remembrance celebration will be held in June.

Lois Rush

Lois "Babysis" Kline Rush, a lifelong resident of Bowie died April 22 at Laurel Regional Hospital following complications from a stroke. She was 83.

Born Nov. 6, 1924 in Bowie, Mrs. Rush graduated from Bowie School, Class of 1940. She had been employed with Acacia Life Insurance Co. in Washington, D.C., retiring in September 1985.

She enjoyed embroidering, crocheting, puzzles and reading.

Survivors include a daughter, Ann Haney of Bowie; a brother, Robert Kline of Cobb Island; a sister, Dorothy Cowan of Bowie; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a son, Charles Rush, who died in July 2007.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at Evans Funeral Home.

Paul Wohkittel

Paul J. Wohkittel Jr. of La Plume, Pa., and formerly of Bowie, died April 26 at Mercy Hospital, Scranton, Pa. He was 76.

Mr. Wohkittel was born April 8, 1932 in Scranton. He graduated from Factoryville High School in 1950 and served in the Army as a sergeant in the Korean Conflict. He had been employed with the Paterson Evening News and Haddon Craftsman in Scranton prior to moving to Bowie to work for the Government Printing Office in Washington, D.C. He retired in 1993 and moved back to La Plume.

He was a member of Our Lady of the Abingtons Catholic Church where he was a Eucharistic minister. An avid outdoorsman, he was also active in local government.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Elaine A. Wohkittel; three sons, Paul, Richard and Thomas Wohkittel; a daughter, Susan Zittle; a brother, William Wohkittel; and nine grandchildren.

Services will be today at 10 a.m. at Church of Our Lady of Abingtons, Dalton; with burial in Evergreen-Woodlawn Cemetery, Factoryville, Pa. Arrangements are by Anthony P. Litwin Funeral Home, Factoryville.
