St. Pius X team No. 2 lost a hard-fought contest to St. Jerome's (Hyattsville), 11-7. St. Jerome's jumped out to a 7-0 lead, but St. Pius battled back and cut the lead to 11-7 heading into their last at-bat. St. Pius starting pitcher Raymond Smith had a strong outing, keeping his team in the game early. Johnny Seidleck came in to pitch in relief and put forth a gutsy effort, pitching out of several tough situations. Louie Sequenzia and J.T. Kolb shared the catching duties, with both making several nice blocks to keep base runners from advancing. Jordan Sharps had a good day at the plate, contributing two RBI, and Daniel Bieler hit the ball well and knocked in two runs. Defensive highlights for St. Pius included a clutch put-out and two heads-up assists by John Spirlet, who saw his first action of the season at second base. The defensive play of the game was turned in by Spencer Flaherty, who made a thrilling grab of a high fly ball to right field and then fired to second to complete a double play. The catch by Flaherty saved at least two runs from scoring. John Paul Smith turned in a fine effort in the field, and stole two bases on the base paths.
St. Pius Rookie boys team defeated St. Joe's, 19-13, for their second win of the season. Pius put early pressure on St. Joe's, scoring six runs in the first inning. The two teams then went back and forth with the lead until Pius took a final and firm grasp of the game, going up, 13-10, in the sixth inning.
The game featured big time offense for Pius from Danny McCrea (4 for 4, double, home run), Brendan Flaherty (3 for 4, 2 doubles, home run), Dominick DiMauro (3 for 4, triple, home run) and Camden Kelley (3 for 4, 2 singles, home run). The Holy Trinity Hawks took on Renaissance in an exciting match-up. It was a nail-biter down to the last play. Quarterback Ben Medema started the scoring for the Hawks with a short touchdown run that tied the game at six late in the first quarter. The Hawks were trailing again late in the first half before Medema found Forrest Staton in the back of the end zone with a touchdown pass. With the one-point play to Spencer Teolis, the Hawks took the lead at the half, 13-12. Late in the fourth quarter, the Hawks were again trailing, 19-13. Holy Trinity again took the lead when Medema connected on his second touchdown pass of the game, hitting Ian Jenkins with a long touchdown catch and run. The Hawks took a 20-19 lead with less than two minutes left in the game, but Renaissance dashed the Hawks' hopes for victory as they scored in the final seconds of the game, edging out the Hawks, 25-20.
In their next game, the Hawks played their best game of the season, knocking off Woodstream, 33-12. The Hawks started the scoring on the opening drive of the game when Medema connected with Staton in the back of the end zone to give the Hawks a 6-0 advantage. After being held without a touchdown for the first time all season the previous week, Shamir Dozier found his way back into the end zone for the Hawks second score, putting them up, 12-0. Just before halftime, Medema threw his second touchdown of the game as Jenkins made a juggling catch off a deflected pass in the end zone and, with the two-point conversion, the Hawks had a commanding 20-0 halftime lead.
Woodstream came out of the gate in the second half, scoring on the first play from scrimmage in the third quarter. The Hawks went back to work on the ensuing drive with a trick play that had Teolis crossing the goal line before the Woodstream defense had any idea what had happened and putting the Hawks up, 26-6. After Jenkins snagged an interception late in the fourth quarter, Medema scrambled his way to an exclamation point touchdown, followed by a one-point play to Casey Gardner to put the Hawks up, 33-6. Medema played an outstanding game and did an excellent job of spreading the ball around. Every player for the Hawks had a reception and the defense shut down everything Woodstream threw at them.
