BSU commencement

Bowie State University will hold its 141st spring commencement featuring NBC News 4 anchor Jim Vance as the speaker Saturday, May 17, at 9 a.m. Vance will address approximately 800 students who will receive bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees as well as certificates in multiple fields ranging from business administration to nursing. The ceremony will be held at the Bulldog Stadium, 14000 Jericho Park Road.

Rec scholarship

The Prince George's County Federation of Park and Recreation Councils will award its 17th annual scholarship in parks and recreation this spring. The $500 scholarship will be awarded to a county resident undergraduate or graduate student who is majoring or intends to major in recreation at a recognized college or university.

Criteria for eligibility, the selection process and schedule are available at www.pgparks.com. Applications should be submitted by May 24 to the Federation at 3100 Teton Lane, Bowie, MD 20715. The winner will be announced in June.

Education reception

The 23rd annual Excellence in Education Reception will be held May 13 at Bowie Center for the Performing Arts.

For 23 years the city has recognized many teachers who have taught at Bowie schools at this event, sponsored by the city's Education Committee. Honorees are selected by their schools as their outstanding teacher for the year.

Following an invitation-only reception in the Recital Hall, for honorees, principals and dignitaries, Bowie residents are invited to attend the program portion of the event in the auditorium during which the actual presentations of certificates, proclamations and other documents recognizing the special efforts of the teachers, will be made.

To join in the program, arrive between 7:15 and 7:20 p.m. for immediate seating. The program will begin at 7:30.

Youth Leadership Bowie

Greater Bowie Chamber of Commerce is accepting applications for the 2008-2009 Youth Leadership Bowie program for students who entered their sophomore or junior years in high school in September 2007.

Students must live in Bowie (residing in ZIP codes 20715, 20716, 20720 or 20721) or attend Bowie High School. Applicants must demonstrate a record of community activity or show an interest in becoming involved in the Bowie community.

Bowie Reads

Bowie Reads is a City of Bowie Education Committee's reading promotion program at Bowiefest. Used books are collected throughout the year and distributed free to community members at the Bowie Reads booth, along with information about reading. The committee still seeks donations of children's books, which may be dropped off at City Hall between 8:30 a.m. and 10 p.m. weekdays, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays through May 26.

Community members may stop at Bowiefest June 2 between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m., and select a book to take home. Books for adults will also be available. For information, contact the Education Committee at lstern@cityofbowie.org or 301-809-3068.
