Aboout the City of Bowie Education Committee
The City of Bowie Education Committee is an appointed group of community volunteers who advise the Bowie City Council on issues related to education.
In addition, the committee develops programs to support schools and teachers in the city, as well as parent education programs.
Education Committee programs include the annual Excellence in Education Reception, honoring teachers selected by schools in the city; the Teacher of the Month Program, which provides an opportunity for parents, fellow teachers and students to nominate a teacher to be recognized monthly; the School Appreciation Program, for which a gift is presented to each school; the Grants for Education Program, which provides $15,000 annually to fund innovative programs in the schools; and the Excellence in Education Scholarship Program, which provides college scholarships to graduating high school seniors.
The committee also co-sponsors the Young Person's Art Gallery at City Hall; contributes to education-related statements for the City Council to present, as well as several other projects; and the Paraprofessional Award, an annual award recognizing paraprofessionals in schools.
Anyone interested in education and becoming a member of the committee should call Leni Stern at 301-809-3068.
