Linthicum: Woman's Club prepares to install new officers

The Woman's Club of Linthicum Heights will install its new officers for the next two years during an awards and installation luncheon to be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Snyder's Willow Grove restaurant, 841 N. Hammonds Ferry Road.
Beverly Death, the first vice president of the Maryland Federation of Women's Clubs and a member of the Chesapeake Woman's Club, will install the new officers. They include: Bernadette Simon, president; Carolyn M. Hall, first vice president; Joan Maynard, second vice president; Dianne Friel, recording secretary; Joyce Houpe, corresponding secretary; and Ruby Harding, treasurer. The officers will serve for the 2008-2010 period.

The president who is leaving office is Laura West.

The woman's club also will be installing board members Jeanne Harycki, Darlene Howard, Vernie Linthicum, Jean Rock and Midge Knell.

Reservations are required for the luncheon.

In addition to the installation of the officers, the club will announce the state awards it received at this year's Maryland Federation of Women's Clubs.

For more information, call Anne Skillman at 410-859-1082.

Furniture needed

He Opens Paths to Everyone, Inc., the Linthicum-based nonprofit that assists people with finding furniture, clothing and other needs, stresses there is still a tremendous demand for its services.

"Our current furniture needs are dressers. We will need other items such as sofas and love seats as we get more room for storage," the group's organizer, Leo Zerhusen, wrote in a recent e-mail. "This is an ongoing need."

Mr. Zerhusen notes that HOPE Inc. is receiving more referrals for help from all the agencies with which it partners. Families are scraping together enough money for their rental deposits and rents, but when all of that is gone, "they find themselves on the floor with little if any furnishings," he said.

There's also a big need for clothing that is clean and in good condition for homeless individuals and for people of all ages. Linens, housewares, jackets, coats and diapers also will be accepted.

The group will host two yard sales this summer on June 21 and July 13. It is accepting donations of items to sell that have a value of at least $2.

"This is our chief means of raising funds for our HOPE mission," Mr. Zerhusen said.

Cancer fundraiser

St. Philip Neri School, 6405 S. Orchard Road, will hold an Alex's Lemonade Stand fundraiser for students, their families, school staff and faculty from noon to 1 p.m. tomorrow in the school's cafeteria.

The money collected from donations for lemonade and lemon sticks will go toward research in fighting childhood cancer, said organizer Sharon Gilbert, a local businessman who sells wigs to women and children who are being treated for cancer.

St. Philip's students are encouraged to wear yellow tomorrow to show their support for the fight against cancer.

The event is not available to the general public.

The lemonade stand fundraiser is based on the concept launched by 4-year-old Alexandra "Alex" Scott in 2000. She died of cancer at age 8, but the Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation continues to raise money toward research into childhood cancers.

Overlook fundraiser

There will be a fundraiser for Overlook Elementary School at the Chick-Fil-A restaurant at the Centre at Glen Burnie from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday. A portion of participating sales during the period will be donated to the school if patrons tell the cashier they are participating in the fundraiser.

For more information, contact the school at 410-222-6585.
