Pasadena: Magothy-Chelsea ordains new associate pastor

Dr. Michael J. Kurtz will be ordained as Magothy-Chelsea Community Lutheran Church's new associate pastor at the 10:30 a.m. service tomorrow at the church at 265 Beach Ave.
Dr. Kurtz has been a member of the church for 19 years and served as lay preacher for the past 17 years. He earned his doctorate from Georgetown University and currently serves as assistant archivist at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. The former president of the Lutheran Historical Society, he has also authored a book on the life of John G. Morris, a prominent 19th-century Baltimore pastor.

Fishing meeting

Mike Hanson of Aqua Clear Tackle will discuss bottom-fishing techniques at The Pasadena Sportfishing Group's next meeting starting at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Earleigh Heights Volunteer Fire Department, 161 Ritchie Highway. The doors will open at 6 p.m.

Beverages and refreshments are available for purchase. There will be door prizes, a 50-50 raffle and a large prize table for all to enjoy.

The meetings are free, open to the public and a place for tales, short and tall, about fishing.

NHS Class of 1998

The Northeast Class of 1998 will celebrate its 10-year reunion from 6 to 10 p.m. May 31 at Reflections Banquet Hall, 8015 Fort Smallwood Road.

Tickets are $40 and include a bull roast-style dinner with unlimited bottled beer, wine and soda. Entertainment will be provided by a disc jockey.

May 17 is the last day to purchase tickets.

High Point news

High Point Elementary invites the community to the Riviera Beach McDonald's, 8490 Fort Smallwood Road, from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday to enjoy a dinner with family and friends and help the school earn some cash.

The school will host Heritage Night starting at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the school gym. Explore the world through the artwork and research completed by the students. There will be different kinds of music, food, cultural traditions and a special dance by the High Point Dance Club.

The school is located at 924 Duvall Highway.

Mountain Road Library, 4730 Mountain Road, will celebrate Children's Book Week with a family bingo night starting at 7 p.m. Tuesday .

Safe boating course

Downs Memorial Park, 8311 John Downs Loop, will host a Maryland Safe Boating Course from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 17 and 24.

The cost is $25 and registration must be completed in person at the park office. Space is limited; early enrollment is encouraged.

Students must attend both classes and pass a written test to receive their certificate.

Basket bingo

Our Lady of the Chesapeake Knights of Columbus Council 10881 will sponsor a basket bingo at 2 p.m. June 1 at the Riviera Beach Volunteer Fire Department hall, 8506 Fort Smallwood Road. Doors will open at 12:30 p.m.

Tickets are $18 in advance or $20 at the door and include 20 games. Extra games, food and snacks will also be sold. There will be a bake sale.

The event will help support a group of Boy Scouts going to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico during the summer.
